Green Smoothie Recipes

September 7th, 2009

At first glance a green smoothie might not look apetizing. I mean, it’s green! This generally evokes a child-like face with a scrunched up nose as a reaction.

But then you taste it. And very soon after that you FEEL it.

And lo and behold, it’s really good!

Green smoothies are one of the very best ways to get a whole lot of nutrients, anti-oxidants, and healing green leafy veggies into your system. When you do this, your body responds with energy and vitality. One of the reasons green smoothies are so excellent is because green leavy veggies that are blended are much easier for the body to assimilate. You would have to spend hours chewing greens to get the same benefit that you would from blended green smoothies.

Starting off, use 60% fruit to 40% greens, and play around with different combinations for variety and taste. The following recipes will get you going. There are lots of great green smoothie recipes out there, like ones from Victoria Boutenko, the mother of green smoothies. Find the ones you like best, and remember to switch your fruits and greens often – don’t keep drinking the same thing every day. Variety = Vitality.

Simple Soothies:

Remember to use 60% fruit, 40% greens when you start drinking smoothies so they taste great! Add pure water to get the consistency you want. Play around with the combinations and drink them SLOWLY.

  • Strawberry, banana, spinach
  • Pineapple, mango, kale
  • Blueberries, banana, swiss chard
  • Pineapple, strawberry, banana, chard, arugula
  • Papaya, cilantro
  • Mixed berries, banana, kale
  • Peaches, butter lettuce

Bok Choy seems to have become my new favorite green – not that I’ll stop using the rest, but it’s nice to have a different, mellow tasting green to use. Love that I can get them at the Farmer’s Market.

This morning: Bok Choy, blueberries, banana, mango. Oh yeah.

Love my Vita-Mix! It makes a world of difference for preparing Green Smoothies! It is well worth the investment. I’ve had mine for at least 20 years and it’s never let me down.
One of my favorites for starting the day is 1/2 bundle of parsley, large handful of spinach and 2 gala apples. It is so light and refreshing and surprisingly delicious.
Some people find it a challenge to drink green smoothies in the winter because it gives them a chill, so I suggest to blend a little longer to allow the mixture to warm up. It is still just as tasty and and nutritious.

Great tips Mel. For some reason when I drink parsley my stomach has a hard time with it, though no one else I know has that effect. However, your recipe sounds great! Thanks for leaving it here.
